Course Details : Pediatric Gait Course

Course Description

This  course focuses on a functional evidence-based approach to the examination, evaluation and treatment for pediatric patients with gait dysfunction. Through  an overview of kinesiology of the pediatric gait cycle the learner will value  the examination of pathological mechanisms impacting the effects of ambulation  and function that contribute to limitations in activity and access to the  environment. Further, a review of interventions including therapeutic exercises as well as orthotic and assistive device management provides the learner with a clinically oriented framework for the contemporary management of these patients. An eclectic set of videos, pictures, demonstrations and case studies with discussion to enhance learning, critical thinking and the application of content that can be immediately used in clinical practice.      

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the learner will:

   
1. Understand the kinesiology and development of the pediatric gait cycle
2. Ability to assess and identify pathological mechanisms associated with gait dysfunction 
3. Identify impairments through examination of the musculoskeletal and neurological systems impacting functional ambulation
4. Identification for need and management of most appropriate orthotic 
5. Identification for need and management of most appropriate assistive device 
6. Develop therapeutic interventions to promote functional ambulation 
 

Course Agenda

     

Hour 1      Review of  Kinesiology of typical and atypical gait cycle

    5 minute Break

Hour 2     Assessment of musculoskeletal and  neurological impairments related to gait and introduction to therapeutic  interventions

    5 minute Break

Hour 3     Overview of interventions including  exercise, orthotics, and assistive devices

   Adjourn
